چکیده

Nitrophenols are present in the atmospheric gas phase and in cloud and rainwater. Their formation via aqueous-phase reactions of phenol with the nitronium ion, NO2 + , arising from N2O5 and ClNO2 partitioning into the aqueous phase, has been proposed but not verified experimentally. Here we demonstrate for the first time that gaseous N2O5 and ClNO2 partitioning into dilute aqueous solutions of phenol yields 2and 4-nitrophenol (and 4-nitrosophenol), but no dinitrophenol isomers. The rate of nitration does not vary significantly between 5 and 20 °C, presumably because of opposing temperature dependences in Henry’s law partitioning and reaction rate coefficients. The rate coefficient for reaction of NO2 + with phenol could not be directly quantified but is evidently large enough for this reaction to compete effectively with the reaction between NO2 + and water and to provide a feasible route to nitrophenol production in the atmosphere.

Theoretical and experimental evidence of the photonitration pathway of phenol and 4-chlorophenol: a mechanistic study of environmental significance.

Light-induced nitration pathways of phenols are important processes for the transformation of pesticide-derived secondary pollutants into toxic derivatives in surface waters and for the formation of phytotoxic compounds in the atmosphere. Moreover, phenols can be used as ˙NO(2) probes in irradiated aqueous solutions. This paper shows that the nitration of 4-chlorophenol (4CP) into 2-nitro-4-chl...

Transmembrane nitration of hydrophobic tyrosyl peptides. Localization, characterization, mechanism of nitration, and biological implications.

We have shown previously that peroxynitrite-induced nitration of a hydrophobic tyrosyl probe is greater than that of tyrosine in the aqueous phase (Zhang, H., Joseph, J., Feix, J., Hogg, N., and Kalyanaraman, B. (2001) Biochemistry 40, 7675-7686). In this study, we have tested the hypothesis that the extent of tyrosine nitration depends on the intramembrane location of tyrosyl probes and on the...

2-[(5-Chloro-2-oxidobenzylidene)azaniumyl]-2-methylpropane-1,3-diol

The title compound, C(11)H(14)ClNO(3), was prepared by the condensation of equimolar quanti-ties of 5-chloro-salicyl-aldehyde and 2-amino-2-methyl-propane-1,3-diol in methanol. In the crystal, it exists in the zwitterionic form, with nominal proton transfer from the phenol group to the imine N atom. This results in the formation of an intra-molecular N-H⋯O hydrogen bond, which generates an S(6)...

Addition of nitrogen dioxide (NO2) in THF solutions of the complexes resulted in the nitration at the 4-positi...
